How to Do the Piso Tire Test: Is It Time to Replace Your Tires?

Keeping your tires in good shape is super important, especially for your safety on the road. But how do you know when it’s time to replace them? Luckily, there’s a quick and easy way to check – the Piso Test! If you’ve been wondering about how to check your tires at home without any fancy tools, this guide will teach you how to use a simple 1 peso coin to measure your tire tread depth. Let’s dive in!

Why Should You Replace Your Tires?

Tires are your car’s connection to the road, so making sure they’re in good condition is key for smooth driving and safety. Worn-out tires can be dangerous, especially in bad weather, and can cause your car’s other parts to wear out faster.

Replacing tires might seem costly, but it’s a small price to pay for your safety. Plus, you can easily check if your tires are ready for replacement by doing a quick tread test at home!

What Is the Piso Test?

The Piso Test is the Filipino version of the “penny test” used in the US. Instead of using a penny, we use a 1 peso coin. The goal is to check how much of the tire’s tread is still in good condition.

How to Do the Piso Tire Test

Here’s how you can do the test in three simple steps:

  1. Get a 1 peso coin – You can use either the old version or the new one.
  2. Insert the coin into the tire tread – Make sure the coin stands upright in the groove.
  3. Check the depth – See how deep the coin goes into the tread. If enough tread covers a certain part of the coin, your tires are still safe to use. If not, it’s time to replace them.
  • For the old peso coin: The year under José Rizal’s head should be covered. If it’s not, your tires are too worn.
  • For the new peso coin: The tread should cover Rizal’s necktie. If you can still see it, your tire treads are too shallow. See image below for a sample, ©️ Top Gear PH.

When to Replace Your Tires

If your tires fail the Piso Test, don’t wait too long to replace them. Driving on worn-out tires can lead to accidents or breakdowns, and it’s better to be safe than sorry. Experts recommend checking your tire tread at least once a month to keep your car running smoothly and safely.

The Benefits of New Tires

Aside from improved safety, new tires can make your drive more comfortable, help your car perform better, and even save you money in the long run by preventing further damage to your vehicle
